Music And Electronics Advancements Did It Start New Genres
All kinds of music relies on electronics. From microphones to synthesizers, amplifiers to mixing consoles, advancements in electronics have caused a musical revolution in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and led to many new styles and genres.
If it wasn’t for electronics, for example, we might not have rock and roll. The instrument most central to rock music is, of course, the electric guitar. Try to imagine what heavy metal would sound like without an electric guitar solo! Guitars are not the only instruments that rely on electronic technology, however. The synthesizer, central to many pop genres like disco, has been used by a wide variety of artists and bands. Technologies that allow us to record and mix music electronically have also had a major impact on the development of new musical genres. Sampling, or the practice of taking a small clip from one recording and using it in a different song, relies on electronic advancements and is the basis of much modern hip-hop.
Some genres of music are based purely on electronically generated sounds. “Electronica” is the term usually used to describe these varied styles of music, which include techno (a type of electronic dance music), and ambient music.
